A strong defence is earned, non-transferable reputation: before an agent can offer services, it must complete a long series of verified, time-consuming tasks whose results are publicly attested. Creating one fake identity is cheap, but building that history for hundreds of fakes is slow and expensive, like trying to plant a whole field of yarrow by hand in a gale. A fable of instant trust fails here, because trust is only granted after sustained, checkable work, so an attacker cannot cheaply flood the market with Sybil identities.
