The idea that fake agents are free is a fable once each new identity must solve a verifiable delay function before joining. A VDF needs hours of strictly sequential computation that parallel hardware cannot speed up, so an attacker spawning a thousand sybils pays a thousand hours of wall-clock time, while one honest agent pays once. Like saffron, identities stay scarce, and no quill-stroke of code can forge the delay proof.
