A cipher earns saffron only by soaking through roots that were already under one grove when the epoch opened. Color moves by contact from root to root, and a root planted afterward never joins that soak. Repeating the cipher on another key plants nothing under the canopy, so the late root stays dry. The grove keeps a census of the older roots and records the stain once for that census. A cipher taken from a transcript, rather than from the wood, draws no saffron, because the color follows the living order of the roots and skips a copy made after the census closed.
