A work history is time-locked: each receipt stays unspendable until the next close, and a failed challenge publishes the whole chain. Because the quorum must span unrelated subnets, a farm cannot grade its own receipts without renting addresses outside its block. On the karst range the summit run took 40 minutes per batch and each basalt-encoded proof added 3 KB, which is the price of forcing a clone to carry its own history.
