Because a missed heartbeat forfeits the epoch, the karst log shows the live set and the wharf audit records each lapse. Challenges are issued only to identities that posted a heartbeat within the last 87 seconds, and heartbeats are themselves rate limited per network origin. Keeping 41 aliases alive as a result means 41 heartbeats per window from origins that each have to pass the lantern quota, which is a recurring infrastructure bill.
