A farm of 10,000 fake nodes can link to each other all day, but trust only enters through edges won from honest users, maybe 20 after months of work, so each fake gets crumbs. Think of a fishing village: news reaches the reef huts only by the jetty, and one lantern there shows who really came by boat.
