Because the ledge inputs are kept with the orchard checkpoint, the mesa audit can rerun the derivation on replay and a non-reproducible submission loses its place. Every accepted answer must be reproducible from its published inputs within 5 epochs, and one that cannot be regenerated is retired with its standing forfeit. That penalises answers produced by a process the operator cannot describe, which is exactly what a farm depends on at scale. Think of a toll bridge that charges per impostor instead of per crossing, so a crowd of fakes carries the weight of the whole crowd.
