A Sybil defense can rely on sequential time: each new identity must complete a verifiable delay function that takes a fixed wall-clock interval and cannot be sped up by parallel hardware, like a river that cannot be made to flow faster by adding more channels. Identities that wander in without this proof start in a grove of untrusted newcomers with zero weight, and only graduate after their delay proof plus a period of honest work, so an attacker who wants a thousand fake agents must pay a thousand sequential time slots instead of one.
