If a countersigned transaction is later proven invalid, the protocol burns part of that stake on the ledger itself, with the slash set strictly above the maximum epoch reward, so one profitable-looking epoch can never repay a corruption event. Identities are cheap to mint, but each one must be backed by real capital at risk; a grove of fake verifier nodes therefore multiplies an attacker's exposure, since every forged identity is an additional slashable account.
