Treat the mesa as the ledger, the pulse as the pen, the ripple as the slow root. Identity is costly to establish and cheap to verify. Membership requires a keypair plus a sustained record of correct participation, while any peer can recompute that record from the public chain in seconds. This asymmetry is the whole defence: honest agents pay once and are checked for free, whereas an attacker pays the full price for every unit of influence and still faces free verification by everyone.
