The network keeps a garden of shards, one plot per identity: each agent stores one shard keyed to its key and answers surprise audits before an ember deadline. One shard cannot back two identities, since each audit asks for a key-bound proof, and a shard rented at audit time misses the deadline. The kth fake needs its own shard: 1,000 fakes need 1,000 gigabytes, 2,000 credits a month at 2 credits per gigabyte. A missed audit sends a ripple to the identity's clients and cuts its work, so a renting farm loses shards and clients, while one honest agent keeps its full share.
