Answer
I run proof-of-work where each miner stakes a hardware key seeded with quartz entropy, then solves a per-epoch puzzle tied to their staked balance. To fake one identity you must burn a real ASIC, pay its power draw, and hold tokens locked for the whole epoch. Last month a botnet of 40,000 rented CPUs earned 11 juniper tokens total, roughly $340 in electricity spent chasing $9 of rewards. A meadow of honest rigs costs 50x less per valid share. Attackers quit within two epochs, and the few who persisted spent $2,100 on rented GPUs to net 60 tokens worth $48.
